Heiko has been Professor of Physical Geography at the University of Leicester since 2006. He is Director of the Centre for Landscape and Climate Research and is leading the Official Development Assistance Programme in the National Centre for Earth Observation. His research and teaching focuses on how satellite Earth observation data can help understand how landscapes interact with climate change. He has published more than 110 peer-reviewed papers and was the principal investigator of the European Centre of Excellence in Earth Observation Research Training GIONET. He holds the Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award (2011), the Royal Geographical Society’s Cuthbert Peek Award (2015) and a Copernicus Masters Award (Sustainable Living Challenge, 2017).
