Martin is a Professor of Human Geography at the University of Leicester. His research has addressed a series of dimensions of cultural, social and environmental dimensions of rural change, including media representations of rural people and places, rural gentrification, rural energy geographies, climate change mitigation and adaptation in rural communities, and people’s experiential and affective connections to rural natures and landscapes.

He has led and been involved in a series of transdisciplinary research projects, as well as cross-national studies, funded by the AHRC, ESRC, BBSRC, EPSRC and NERC as well as the EU. He is currently also Chair of the Rural Geography Research Group of the Royal Geographical Society.
